Fourteen major stars(十四主星)

Introduction

This chapter introduces Zi Wei Dou Shu’s(紫微斗數) “class teachers”: the fourteen major stars(十四主星). They set the overall character of a palace, like a person’s initial attributes. A palace with no major stars is an empty palace(空宮), interpreted using the major stars in its opposite palace(對宮). Some readers regard this as unfavorable or find it hard to interpret, because it can suggest a lack of direction and no firm internal anchor. Yet it also means openness to many influences. Imagine solving a problem by learning from the classmates around you: capable classmates offer many useful approaches, while struggling classmates may offer less helpful guidance. Empty palaces are therefore more strongly influenced by their trine and opposite palaces(三方四正) and hidden partner palace(暗合宮) than palaces with major stars. The proportion of empty palaces is ≈16.44%.

Zi Wei Dou Shu(紫微斗數) also has dual-star configurations(雙星), in which two major stars occupy one palace. Their traits do not simply add together; they interact and produce new characteristics while retaining their own nature. For example, warrior(武曲) is aloof and forthright. With wolf(貪狼), warrior’s(武曲) sharper traits soften, while wolf’s(貪狼) desires become more practical.

This article gives a broad introduction to the stars and their combinations; space does not allow every trait to be covered. Use these basics to develop your own conclusions, then check them repeatedly against charts to deepen your understanding. You may discover further interesting traits. My descriptions may not be entirely accurate, since understanding and expression differ from person to person. Questions and challenges are welcome, either directly or in the discussion forum.

Some traits emerge more readily when particular auxiliary(輔星) and miscellaneous stars(雜曜) reinforce them. For example, emperor(紫微) and empress(天府) are more likely to show philosophical depth with emptiness stars(空曜). Otherwise, the pursuit of authority and enjoyment of admiration may remain their dominant traits.

This series of articles is original. Please indicate the source when reprinting.

Note

Star traits describe tendencies, often instinctive ones that appear without conscious effort. They need not always show: education, social development, and greater understanding can modify or conceal them. Do not judge people through stereotypes based on stars. A diverse society needs many personalities to stay vibrant. People associated with any star can be decent or harmful, just as people in any country can be good or bad. Approach every star without prejudice.

When discussing dual-star combinations, I cite classical passages about the patterns they form so that readers can find the original sources. These quotations are references, not rules to follow unquestioningly. The outcomes described depend on other supporting conditions, so a pattern alone is not enough to draw a conclusion.

emperor(紫微) characteristics

Emperor(紫微) is known as an emperor star(帝王星). That does not mean a person with its traits will become a ruler. It suggests a regal character: a strong desire for control and possession, an attraction to showy but impractical things and praise, and a preference for public image over substance. This can create distance from others. It also has qualities associated with leadership, including long-term goals, a broad perspective, and a desire to instruct others.

This star needs substantial support and resources to develop. With the right conditions, emperor(紫微) can build abilities that match its commanding presence and show strong skills in organizing people and planning. Without enough understanding, knowledge, and competence, however, its ambitions can exceed its abilities: it may be unable to reach its preferred position yet unwilling to accept a more modest one.

If emperor(紫微) is a major star in your soul palace(命宮), broaden your knowledge and build a solid foundation. That can help you become respected in work and life. Be especially wary of excessive flattery: emperor(紫微) can become so absorbed in praise that it loses perspective.

emperor(紫微) combination

emperor(紫微) + empress(天府) Probability in the soul palace(命宮)≈1.47%

Emperor(紫微) and empress(天府) are both sovereign stars(帝星). Together they intensify the desire for control and possession, and the wish to have every situation in hand. Yet the tension between vanity and practicality can make it harder to reach a firm decision.

Consider whether your abilities match your expectations. Emperor–empress(紫府) is strongly drawn to luxury, with high standards for food, clothing, and everyday possessions. With strong pride and vanity, growing up in poverty can be difficult. It likes to compare its circumstances with others. Empress(天府) may keep this comparison from being displayed, but it still happens inwardly.

At school, these traits favor running for class leadership and organizing others. Good guidance can develop them into strong management skills. Compared with emperor(紫微) alone, the emperor–empress configuration(紫府同宮) has stronger desires: its spirit palace(福德宮) always contains wolf(貪狼), which also broadens its interests.

People with emperor and empress(紫微天府) tend to think deeply and plan far ahead, which can support philosophical insight. Their distance from others also plays a part. Early in life, they may feel they should always be the center of attention. Over time, others may stop including them, leading to loneliness. That distance can prompt reflection and, for some, a deeper understanding of themselves. Someone who gains that insight can inspire real respect.

emperor(紫微) + marshal(七殺) Probability in the soul palace(命宮)≈1.36%

Pairing emperor(紫微) with any of marshal(七殺), rebel(破軍), or wolf(貪狼)—the change-oriented trio(殺破狼)—makes it more grounded and practical. marshal(七殺) makes the sometimes wavering emperor firmer in its decisions and less easily influenced by people or circumstances.

A sovereign with the ability to act can be formidable once it finds the right direction. Emperor–marshal(紫微七殺) therefore suits sustained work in a specialist field and can build achievements over time. If it instead gives up making an effort, changing its mind can be difficult: its aloofness and reluctance to listen to others make intervention hard.

The traits described above suggest that a person with the emperor–marshal(紫微七殺) combination may find it difficult to change course after being psychologically manipulated. Broaden your experience and knowledge, and be cautious in unfamiliar areas so that someone else’s persuasion does not lead you into a situation with no easy way forward or back.

emperor(紫微) + rebel(破軍) Probability in the soul palace(命宮)≈1.39%

Emperor(紫微) with rebel(破軍) is like a ruler gaining an army, bringing a powerful drive that sweeps obstacles aside. It can be rebellious and resistant to control from childhood. Its surface palace(遷移宮) always contains minister(天相), however, so it may be considerate with strangers yet much more domineering with familiar people, showing them less courtesy.

This combination appears generous, bold, and unconcerned with minor formalities or grievances, which makes people enjoy its company. Yet emperor–rebel(紫微破軍) can put itself under strain to maintain appearances, pretending to afford or manage more than it can. Its social circle therefore has a strong influence on it.

A circle of fair-weather companions and deceitful people can make life difficult for emperor–rebel(紫微破軍). If these are your soul-palace(命宮) stars, learn to refuse rather than overextend yourself to save face. This combination favors talent in sport and the arts, but usually has less interest in formal study. Helping a child with these traits sit still and concentrate on learning can require considerable effort.

emperor(紫微) + wolf(貪狼) Probability in the soul palace(命宮)≈2.83%

This combination is called Romance challenging the sovereign(桃花犯主) because wolf(貪狼) has the symbolic nature of romance(桃花) and is Zi Wei Dou Shu’s(紫微斗數) leading romance star. The Taiwei Rhapsody(太微賦) says 桃花犯主至淫. That phrase has made many people view emperor–wolf(紫微貪狼) differently, but taking it at face value is a major misunderstanding.

Emperor–wolf(紫微貪狼) is sociable and curious about unfamiliar people and things. It learns quickly in areas that interest it but finds specialization harder. It often appears charming and flirtatious, with talent in both men and women. The author links the old description of “extreme lust” to talented people’s visits to historical entertainment and pleasure quarters.

Wolf(貪狼) represents desire and intensifies emperor’s(紫微) possessiveness and need for control. Emperor–wolf(紫微貪狼) can become intolerant of anything it finds objectionable and impose double standards, allowing itself freedoms it denies others. Such domineering behavior can have irreparable consequences in romantic relationships.

Emperor–wolf(紫貪) also has a talent for boasting and is easily goaded into proving itself, creating its own traps. Persisting in a daunting task despite the odds can be courageous. Knowing a task is beyond your ability but believing you can do it simply because a crowd flatters you is foolish.

emperor(紫微) + minister(天相) Probability in the soul palace(命宮)≈1.44%

Classical texts say 紫微天相,為臣不忠,為子不孝—an exaggerated description. Someone with emperor–minister(紫微天相) may jokingly hope their mother or manager never sees it, but there is no need to fear it. The social order of that era favored obedience and little independent thought. People who thought for themselves, argued back, or resisted discipline could therefore be labeled disloyal or unfilial.

minister(天相) has a balanced range of abilities, including devising plans, managing, carrying out tasks, organizing, and socializing. Paired with emperor(紫微), it gains the confidence to express its ideas and put them into practice. Emperor’s support also helps it challenge unreasonable demands.

Emperor–minister’s(紫微天相) prospects depend strongly on finding someone who recognizes and supports its talent. It needs room to express itself without undue constraint; a jealous manager or controlling parents can make life difficult. This combination appears in the Heavenly and Earthly Nets(天羅地網) positions, so both circumstances and state of mind have a strong influence on it.

Emperor(紫微) reduces minister’s(天相) tendency to waver, while minister makes emperor less distant. The combination resembles a ruler holding an official seal or a general holding the credentials to command an army. It is a notably balanced pairing.

advisor(天機) Probability in the soul palace(命宮)≈4.13%

Yin and Yang(陰陽)Yin 🌑five elements(五行)yi Wood(乙木) 🪵Star groupThird star of the Southern Dipper(南斗第三星)
Symbolic naturegoodness(善)Element colorcyanEnergy colorBlue light
Domainruler of the siblings palace(兄弟主)RoleControls wisdom and spiritAliasTravel star, religion star, stabilizing-axis star, wisdom star, longevity star

advisor(天機) characteristics

Advisor(天機) is a planning-oriented star and a source of sixth sense. Its active mind sees people and situations from unusual angles. That intelligence can reduce its inclination to act personally: if it can arrange for someone else to do the work, it may prefer that. It does not lack the ability to act, but favors thinking and talking over hands-on work.

The profile card describes advisor(天機) as the ruler of the siblings palace(兄弟主), reflecting strong social skills and the ability to rally people. It can keep a gathering lively and set the right atmosphere, hence the name pivot star(定軸星). Yet settling down to study one subject deeply is difficult, so its knowledge is often broad rather than deep.

Advisor(天機) is impatient with people or situations it regards as foolish, and may show dismissiveness. If advisor(天機) is in your soul palace(命宮), deepen your knowledge so your ideas become practical. Building emotional resilience is equally important: a mind that continually notices what it considers foolish needs strength to live with those frustrations.

advisor(天機) combination

advisor(天機) + sage(天梁) Probability in the soul palace(命宮)≈2.72%

This combination forms the Benevolence and Protection at Court(善蔭朝綱格) pattern. The Taiwei Rhapsody(太微賦) describes it as 善蔭朝綱,仁慈之長, suggesting the demeanor of a protective head of a family.

Advisor–sage(天機天梁) is talkative, with thoughts that shift quickly between topics. Conversation requires keeping up with those shifts. Compared with advisor alone, it is more eager to lead the gathering and dislikes being overlooked. Letting the atmosphere fall flat feels deeply embarrassing to it.

Advisor’s(天機) symbolic nature is goodness(善). The Chinese character is used in words for kindness and changeability, which the author connects to its shifting thoughts. In dual-star combinations, advisor can also be read as “skilled at…,” with the other star’s trait filling the gap. Advisor–sage(機梁) can thus be understood as being good at protecting others.

Advisor–sage(機梁) has strong empathy and sensitivity to others’ emotions, in keeping with its protective nature. It can pull back just before upsetting someone. The author compares this to a flexible strategy: retreat when the other person presses forward, avoid a stronger opponent, and move forward when resistance is weaker.

advisor(天機) + advocator(巨門) Probability in the soul palace(命宮)≈2.88%

The advisor–advocator(天機巨門) combination forms the Advocator and Advisor Together(巨機同臨格) pattern. Using the earlier reading of advisor as “skilled at…,” this pairing means “skilled at expression.” Its urge to express itself is among the strongest in Zi Wei Dou Shu(紫微斗數): it thinks quickly and speaks just as readily.

The Rhapsody on Dou Shu Essentials(斗數骨髓賦) says 巨機同宮公卿之位. This does not mean that everyone with advisor and advocator(天機巨門) will become a high-ranking official. However, someone who speaks persuasively, thinks quickly and logically, and relates well to others is likely to attract supporters. These qualities can be a considerable advantage in a career in public office.

Advisor–advocator(天機巨門) is sociable and warm-hearted, so it usually has many friends. Making friends indiscriminately, however, can bring difficulties. Advisor(天機) is sensitive to changes around it, while advocator(巨門), a dark star(暗星), readily absorbs negativity. People with this combination should develop sound judgment about people and situations, choosing trustworthy company and avoiding manipulative people rather than relying too confidently on their own cleverness.

Advisor–advocator(天機巨門) may talk confidently in a crowd and seem close to everyone, but much of that sociability is simply keeping up social relationships rather than genuine intimacy. The influence of advocator(巨門) as a dark star(暗星) brings some inner insecurity, which also makes being alone uncomfortable.

advisor(天機) + moon(太陰) Probability in the soul palace(命宮)≈2.83%

Following the same reasoning, advisor–moon(天機太陰) means “good at caring for people.” This differs from advisor–sage(天機天梁): the latter protects disadvantaged people like an older sibling, whereas advisor–moon offers the nurturing care associated with a mother.

Attending to other people’s feelings is therefore a strength of advisor–moon(天機太陰). Emotional intelligence and above-average looks tend to make these people popular. Yet this can leave them in a passive role in romance: with so many people pursuing them, they have fewer opportunities to pursue someone they themselves truly like.

Advisor’s(天機) deliberation and moon’s(太陰) caution make this combination strongly risk-averse. People with these traits prefer stability and think things through repeatedly before deciding. They hesitate to compete openly, but when someone else takes the lead and bears the pressure, their strategic ability can come into its own.

This combination can use subtle tactics as a form of self-protection. Kept within reasonable limits, that resourcefulness can work well. Its strengths are emotional awareness and aesthetic judgment; its weakness is coping with adversity. Building resilience therefore deserves particular attention for advisor–moon(天機太陰).

sun(太陽) Probability in the soul palace(命宮)≈4.27%

Yin and Yang(陰陽)Yang 🌕five elements(五行)bing Fire(丙火) 🔥Star groupCentral star system(中天星系)

DomainRuler of career(官祿)RoleGoverns light, universal love, and givingAliasPolitics star, reputation star, travel star, law star, father star, husband star, son star, public-relations star, employer star

sun(太陽) characteristics

Sun(太陽) is likened to a crown prince because it always occupies the children position(子女位) relative to emperor(紫微). If the distinction between a palace and a position is unfamiliar, first read the palace introduction(宮位). Sun shares emperor’s desire for respect and inclination to instruct others, but, as the heir rather than the ruler, it is more approachable. This explains its association with light and universal care. Its position as heir also brings a stronger longing for authority, hence its symbolic nature of power and status(權貴).

This desire for authority also explains why sun(太陽) tends to assert itself. When its legitimate rights are infringed upon, it readily uses the law to defend them. Hence its nicknames political star(政治星) and legal star(法律星).

If sun(太陽) is the major star in your soul palace(命宮), respect personal boundaries: what you intend as kindness may feel overbearing and put others under pressure. As the star associated with the career palace(官祿宮), sun has strong career ambitions, is good at promoting and presenting itself, and has excellent organizational skills.

Its strong abilities can also make sun(太陽) the dominant partner in a relationship. During disagreements, it cares greatly about having a say, which can put considerable pressure on its partner. This gave rise to the traditional claim that “sun is unfavorable in a woman’s chart.” We should discard that view today: gender should not determine whether a chart is judged favorable or unfavorable.

sun(太陽) combination

sun(太陽) + sage(天梁) Probability in the soul palace(命宮)≈2.54%

Sun–sage(太陽天梁) occurs only in the Mao(卯) and You(酉) palaces. In Mao it is called Sun Illuminating the Thunder Gate(日照雷門格), also known as Sunrise in the East(日出扶桑格). The Rhapsody on Dou Shu Essentials(斗數骨髓賦) says 日照雷門富貴榮華. So, readers with this combination, make the most of its promise! Some teachers call its You placement Sunset in the West(日落西山格). The name matters less than the difference in disposition: in Mao it is more active and proactive; in You it is more passive and reserved.

People with sun–sage(太陽天梁) especially enjoy looking after others. They generally treat their family well and are family-oriented. Sage’s(天梁) moral pride combined with sun’s(太陽) desire to broadcast can make them somewhat showy and prone to grand talk. Regardless of gender, they tend to be capable and want to take the lead.

Sun–sage(太陽天梁) often has many friends because it likes caring for others. It should watch whether its forceful way of showing kindness makes people feel pressured. Since the opposite palace(對宮) has no major star, this combination is poor at—or simply disdains—putting on a front. It tends to be straightforward.

sun(太陽) + advocator(巨門) Probability in the soul palace(命宮)≈2.71%

巨日同宮官封三代—doesn’t that sound encouraging? The saying comes from the Rhapsody on Dou Shu Essentials(斗數骨髓賦). People with Advocator and Sun in the Same Palace(巨日同宮格) speak persuasively. Their strength is less dazzling rhetoric than the sense of trustworthiness that comes naturally from within.

Compared with advisor(天機) + advocator(巨門), which wants to express itself, sun–advocator(太陽巨門) is more oriented toward communicating a message and promoting it. It has a talent for using language as a practical tool, giving it a natural advantage in learning foreign languages.

Sun–advocator(太陽巨門) cares about its reputation and can be assertive in relationships. Advocator(巨門) somewhat reduces its confidence, but only relative to other sun(太陽) combinations. Sun’s confidence depends strongly on Star brightness, so this combination is more confident in Yin(寅) than in Shen(申). With age, sun’s influence grows stronger in Yin, whereas advocator’s influence grows stronger in Shen.

sun(太陽) + moon(太陰) Probability in the soul palace(命宮)≈2.89%

日月同臨官居侯伯 comes from the Rhapsody on Dou Shu Essentials(斗數骨髓賦). It claims that sun and moon sharing a palace can confer noble rank. That is a very one-sided and exaggerated interpretation. The two stars have contrasting temperaments, so the sun–moon(太陽太陰) combination has two particularly distinct sides: sometimes gentle, sometimes forceful.

These contrasting traits can give the sun–moon(太陽太陰) combination a sarcastic or passive-aggressive manner. Clear, considerate communication matters; repeated barbed remarks can drive friends away. Each star individually tends to look after others, and together that tendency may turn into excessive involvement in other people’s affairs.

Emotional stability is important for the sun–moon(太陽太陰) combination. The desire to express ideas can be strong, but speech may not keep pace with thought: many ideas, less action. This combination can also be particularly concerned with cleanliness.

warrior(武曲) Probability in the soul palace(命宮)≈1.47%

Yin and Yang(陰陽)Yin 🌑five elements(五行)xin Metal(辛金) 🪙Star groupSixth star of the Northern Dipper
Symbolic naturewealthElement colorwhiteEnergy colorOpalescent light
DomainRuler of wealth(財帛)RoleIn charge of wealth, a brave generalAliasEarned-income star, solitude star, war star, general star

warrior(武曲) characteristics

Warrior(武曲) is a well-known loner in Zi Wei Dou Shu(紫微斗數). Its aloof, uncompromising nature led traditional practitioners to call it star of harm and conflict(刑剋之星). In practice, it simply struggles to express itself and dislikes socializing. Its bluntness can unintentionally hurt people, gradually leaving it to go its own way.

Warrior(武曲) also dislikes imposing on others. This is not laziness: it wants to avoid asking favors and the social obligations that come with them. That makes it decisive and effective at carrying things out. Its rule is to do what it can itself rather than trouble someone else.

Strengths come with weaknesses, and planning is warrior’s(武曲) biggest weakness. Its stubbornness and readiness to act help it thrive when the direction is right, but it tends to resist advice. If warrior is the major star in your soul palace(命宮), listen to those around you. Even advice you do not adopt can reveal considerations you have overlooked.

warrior(武曲) combination

warrior(武曲) + empress(天府) Probability in the soul palace(命宮)≈1.44%

Warrior(武曲) represents regular, earned income, while empress(天府) is a treasury star associated with accumulating wealth. Many therefore assume that warrior–empress(武曲天府) is good at earning or saving money. That reading is too narrow. To judge this, we must consider the qualities of all relevant stars together.

Empress(天府) softens warrior’s(武曲) firmness, making it less blunt and more adaptable. Neither star likes asking for help, so people with warrior–empress(武曲天府) prefer doing things themselves. This makes them highly independent and more mature than people represented by other star combinations.

This combination is highly capable at work, but may overestimate itself and take on tasks beyond its abilities. That is not entirely a drawback: willingness to try also helps bring success. Warrior–empress(武曲天府) has broad interests, chiefly because wolf(貪狼) occupies its spirit palace(福德宮). That placement can also make it intensely absorbed in the people or things it likes.

Although warrior–empress(武曲天府) dislikes troubling others, it gladly helps solve their problems, especially when the relationship is good. This helpfulness, together with an easygoing, optimistic attitude and generosity, gives it a broad social circle.

warrior(武曲) + minister(天相) Probability in the soul palace(命宮)≈1.28%

Minister(天相) makes warrior(武曲) gentler, while warrior gives minister more ability to carry plans through. The combination dislikes being constrained by others and prefers breaking new ground independently. Its limited big-picture perspective and tendency to do everything itself can make career expansion challenging. Still, warrior is known for perseverance and hard work, so these challenges are not insurmountable for warrior–minister(武曲天相).

Warrior–minister(武曲天相) makes decisions firmly, has its own methods and reasoning, and follows through independently—admirable strengths. However, it occurs in the four horse positions(四馬地) and likes personally taking the lead, so life can involve much rushing around and hard work.

Minister(天相) is known for understanding people and putting their talents to good use, but warrior(武曲) weakens these qualities. Warrior–minister(武曲天相) therefore needs care and consideration in relationships: it must learn to work with people as well as focus on tasks. Its strong career drive can lead it to take on a side business alongside its main work, making life demanding. When circumstances permit, it readily considers starting a business or pursuing something new.

warrior(武曲) + marshal(七殺) Probability in the soul palace(命宮)≈1.39%

Warrior’s(武曲) firmness and marshal’s(七殺) tenacity form the most resolute combination in Zi Wei Dou Shu(紫微斗數). It is bold, willing to strive, and unafraid of challenges, often giving its parents cause to worry during childhood. Once warrior–marshal(武曲七殺) decides on something, it tends to pursue the goal quietly rather than discuss it with others.

Yet such rigidity can also bring setbacks: what cannot bend is more likely to break. Warrior–marshal(武曲七殺) dislikes scheming in relationships and can feel out of place socially. Classical texts therefore associate it with military occupations. With relatively fewer such roles available today, it also needs to adapt to the wider social environment.

Decisiveness and the ability to get things done define warrior–marshal(武曲七殺). Life’s trials and accumulated experience soften its sharp edges with age. It should be especially cautious about starting a business with partners: its straightforward enthusiasm can leave it disappointed after others exploit it. When an opportunity arrives, think carefully and assess the risks before rushing in.

Warrior–marshal(武曲七殺) also shows care bluntly. Even with good intentions, its words and actions can be misunderstood. This can cause unease about socializing, increasingly so as it learns more about society. Finding relationships complicated and fearing it may hurt others unintentionally, it may choose to avoid social contact.

warrior(武曲) + rebel(破軍) Probability in the soul palace(命宮)≈1.41%

Warrior(武曲) and rebel(破軍) form a distinctive combination full of fighting spirit. Warrior supplies decisiveness and action; rebel brings challenges and breakthroughs. Together, they create a personality that breaks with convention.

People with warrior–rebel(武曲破軍) tend to show courage and an unyielding spirit. In pursuing a goal, they use unconventional methods, challenge the status quo, and dare to take risks. Breaking with routine and continually pushing boundaries are hallmarks of this combination.

Warrior–rebel(武曲破軍) can also face difficulties. Excessive focus on its goals may make it overlook changes in its environment and others’ opinions, appearing stubborn or indifferent. It prefers solving problems through its own abilities and is reluctant to seek outside help.

People with this star combination are often good at overcoming difficulties and thinking innovatively. They challenge tradition, solve problems unconventionally, and follow their own path. Insisting on their ideas may cause conflict, but their determination and courage also let them explore new possibilities and innovate in adversity.

warrior(武曲) + wolf(貪狼) Probability in the soul palace(命宮)≈2.71%

An old saying goes, 武貪不發少年人. It is often read as saying that people with warrior–wolf(武曲貪狼) will not succeed young. This article favors reading it as a caution against success coming too early, rather than a prediction that early success is impossible. Why should the timing matter? The following paragraphs explain this in terms of personality and life experience.

Warrior–wolf(武曲貪狼) combines planning with execution, making it a formidable combination. Imagine a practical, socially skilled person who can both plan and act: that is a strong starting point. Such abilities can bring overconfidence. Early acclaim without first experiencing life’s setbacks may inflate the ego; when fortune changes and a low period arrives, the contrast can be psychologically overwhelming.

This contrast can leave warrior–wolf(武曲貪狼) unable to accept failure or get back on its feet. Life’s hardships, however, can bring maturity and resilience, making its abilities more rounded. Success that comes after this preparation has a much firmer foundation.

This combination is curious about the world and eager to explore, so its learning can cover many disparate subjects. Deep achievement in one field requires settling down and shutting out distractions. Neither depth nor breadth of knowledge is inherently better; the choice depends on the individual.

fortunate(天同) Probability in the soul palace(命宮)≈4.32%

Yin and Yang(陰陽)Yang 🌕five elements(五行)ren Water(壬水) 🌊Star groupFourth star of the Southern Dipper(南斗第四星)
Symbolic naturegentleness(溫和)Element colorblackEnergy colorwhite light
DomainRuler of spirit(福德)RoleEnjoymentAliasStar of good fortune, star of longevity

fortunate(天同) characteristics

For approachability, fortunate(天同) would take first place, hence its symbolic nature of gentleness(溫和). This gentleness makes it accommodating and disinclined to compete. Rather than fight for things, it devotes more energy to enjoying life, earning the title ruler of the spirit palace(福德宮主).

Fortunate(天同) needs relatively few resources to develop. warrior(武曲) always occupies its parents palace(父母宮), suggesting parents who tend to be forceful and a high-pressure home environment. This offers a lesson: to keep children from becoming people who passively accept mistreatment, give them sufficient care and affection. Avoid overly blunt treatment, and do not try to settle every problem with material things.

With its cooperative, supportive nature, fortunate(天同) needs to learn to refuse and let go, bravely saying no to people or things it does not want. Yet its willingness to yield also avoids many conflicts and unnecessary losses. That is why it is called an auspicious star(福星).

Fortunate(天同) dislikes uncertainty and instability, and does not want to stake everything on an outcome it cannot rely on. Its cautious nature can seem to lack drive. But a stable life is a valid choice too. It is hard to imagine a world in which everyone is competitive and determined to outdo others.

fortunate(天同) combination

fortunate(天同) + moon(太陰) Probability in the soul palace(命宮)≈2.71%

Gentleness is a hallmark of fortunate–moon(天同太陰). It is known for being good-tempered, enjoying life, and preferring quiet surroundings. This does not mean it never gets angry; its anger simply tends not to be explosive. It is also good at finding reasons to let go of worries about gains and losses.

This combination tends to avoid problems: “If I cannot stand up to it, I can at least stay away.” It strongly prefers stability, fears the unknown, and feels insecure inside. Fortunate–moon(天同太陰) puts people at ease through its kindness, but endlessly yielding and avoiding difficulties does not always solve them.

These traits show how much fortunate–moon(天同太陰) depends on supportive surroundings. In an unfavorable environment, it struggles to change its circumstances by standing up for itself. Long periods of suppressing its feelings and giving way can make extreme reactions more likely.

Fortunate–moon(天同太陰) has artistic talent and a strong aesthetic sense. It appreciates the finer touches of life, romance, and surprises. It is relatively unguarded in relationships and can be taken advantage of. Disliking changes to its habits, it can struggle to leave an unhealthy environment. If this combination occupies your soul palace(命宮), learning to let go of harmful attachments is especially important.

fortunate(天同) + sage(天梁) Probability in the soul palace(命宮)≈2.77%

Fortunate–sage(天同天梁) was highly regarded by earlier practitioners. The Rhapsody on Dou Shu Essentials(斗數骨髓賦) says 府相同梁性必好, describing people represented by these stars as well-behaved and likable. Fortunate–sage is indeed the accommodating person in a circle of friends, considerate toward everyone and usually seen in public as easy to get along with.

Yet fortunate–sage(同梁) is less adept at close relationships. It can struggle to get along with a spouse or family as well as it does with friends. It occurs only in Yin(寅) and Shen(申), both four horse positions(四馬地), making an encounter with horse(天馬) and the formation of Sage and Horse Wandering(梁馬飄蕩格) very likely. Its drive for advancement is already weak; horse(天馬) can make it even easier to lose direction in the pursuit of pleasure.

This is not to say that less ambition is bad. Fortunate–sage(天同天梁) knows how to enjoy life and has a natural gift for simplifying complicated things. There is nothing wrong with a slower life or opting out of relentless competition. Fortunate(天同) is a star of good fortune and sage(天梁) a star of protection; both are credited with relieving difficulties and tempering harmful influences. Too many such favorable stars, however, can encourage laziness and weaken the drive to act.

The Rhapsody on Dou Shu Essentials(斗數骨髓賦) also says 機月同梁作吏人. When fortunate and sage(天同天梁) share a palace, their own palace, its two trine palaces, and the opposite palace necessarily form Advisor, Moon, Fortunate, and Sage(機月同梁格). This pattern suits public administration, but limited ambition tends to keep it in frontline or relatively undemanding roles.

fortunate(天同) + advocator(巨門) Probability in the soul palace(命宮)≈2.54%

Fortunate–advocator(天同巨門) generally has a strong artistic streak. The version with an empty soul palace in Wei and these stars opposite it in the surface palace at Chou(丑) is called Pearl Emerging from the Sea(明珠出海格). Its artistic flair is, jokingly speaking, off the charts. The empty-palace arrangement, however, makes firm decisions harder and more dependent on circumstances.

Fortunate(天同) evokes a child, while advocator(巨門) evokes a huge door with darkness behind it. Imagine a child shut behind that dark door: fear and insecurity come naturally. This feeling is strongest in the arrangement with an empty soul palace(命宮). When fortunate–advocator(天同巨門) occupies the soul palace itself, sun(太陽) and sage(天梁) in the spirit palace(福德宮) greatly reduce that unease.

Advocator(巨門) reduces fortunate’s(天同) approachability somewhat, but also makes it less easy to bully and more willing to stand up for what it wants. Fortunate–advocator(天同巨門) expresses itself well, so its artistic talents often center on verbal or vocal expression, such as public speaking and singing.

Fortunate–advocator(同巨) is reluctant to share its inner feelings and protects itself strongly, a common trait of fortunate(天同) pairings. Being initially unguarded, it can offer sincerity only to receive coldness in return, gradually closing itself off. Fortunate’s optimism helps: it knows how to find happiness in what it has.

judge(廉貞) characteristics

Experienced practitioners often shake their heads at judge(廉貞), which classical texts also rate poorly, saying 自古廉貞最難明. People represented by it thus get blamed through no fault of their own. Much of the prejudice comes from its resemblance to warrior(武曲): it dislikes socializing and is awkward with social conventions. Its symbolic nature is confinement(囚), but most often it is itself that it confines.

Judge(廉貞) finds it difficult to open up because its need for self-protection is strong. It can seem out of place amid joking or lively exchanges: its rational, serious attitude makes it hard to tell whether others are joking or sincere. This seriousness can look aloof rather than approachable. Strong pride may also lead it to hurt people unintentionally through words or actions, causing considerable frustration.

Emperor(紫微), warrior(武曲), and judge(廉貞) always form a trine relationship. All can seem somewhat distant, especially judge. Since flattery is unnatural to it, attempts to please others feel awkward. It dislikes ingratiating itself or showing deference merely for appearances, giving the impression that even a superior must tread carefully around it.

Judge(廉貞) also needs considerable resources to develop. With adequate support, its high standards, serious attitude, and generally favorable personal image can help it excel in many fields. These qualities together can also make it a target of envy and exclusion. Its social circle is therefore usually small, with few close friends.

judge(廉貞) combination

judge(廉貞) + marshal(七殺) Probability in the soul palace(命宮)≈1.41%

Judge–marshal(廉貞七殺) may have the most conflicting descriptions in classical texts. The Taiwei Rhapsody(太微賦) says 七殺廉貞同位,路上埋屍, whereas the Rhapsody on Dou Shu Essentials(斗數骨髓賦) says both 廉貞七殺反為積富之人 and 廉貞七殺流蕩天涯. These descriptions clearly contradict each other, so we need to examine what causes such different outcomes.

Judge–marshal(廉貞七殺) is rational and serious, socially awkward, and often appears aloof at first. Its direct communication may overlook people’s feelings and hurt them unintentionally, even when it merely means to state facts. This unpolished manner, combined with serious conduct and strong individual ability, can provoke envy and exclusion.

High personal standards and strong pride can make judge–marshal(廉貞七殺) initially afraid of difficult tasks. Fear of failure and embarrassment means it needs considerable reassurance and encouragement to build confidence. Once that confidence develops, it becomes tenacious and willing to overcome difficulties.

Its sometimes almost obsessive meticulousness, together with a willingness to persist and invest effort once committed, can help judge–marshal(廉貞七殺) excel in many fields. Although its name sounds fierce, it is actually strongly rule-abiding. Give it a framework and it tends to keep itself within those boundaries.

judge(廉貞) + rebel(破軍) Probability in the soul palace(命宮)≈1.35%

Judge’s(廉貞) confinement(囚) and rebel’s(破軍) depletion(耗) form a bold, expansive pioneering combination. Its feelings show on its face, and it acts from the heart. It dares to do and say what others will not, often offending people without realizing it.

This strongly pioneering combination occupies the four thriving positions(四旺地) and likes challenges beyond its current abilities. Many texts describe it as achieving distinction in a military career. Its practical skills, ideas, and willingness to try explain why it can stand out in frontline work. It also has talent in engineering and sports.

Many assume judge–rebel(廉貞破軍) must be bad-tempered, but that is inaccurate. With greater understanding and better emotional management, this combination can be very charismatic. The Rhapsody on Dou Shu Essentials(斗數骨髓賦) says 貞居卯酉定是公胥吏輩, referring to this combination’s tendency toward military or police work. It is also active in hands-on technical fields and produces many skilled craftspeople.

judge(廉貞) + wolf(貪狼) Probability in the soul palace(命宮)≈2.77%

Judge–wolf(廉貞貪狼) combines two romance stars(桃花星) and is labeled drink, sensual pleasure, wealth, and pride, which may suggest sociability and a love of nightlife. That is misleading. Although both stars concern attraction, judge(廉貞) is a confinement star(囚星) and “confines” the star paired with it. Both are also in their weakest brightness state when together (see star brightness). Judge–wolf does have those desires, but they mostly remain inward.

This combination has strong pride and is easily hurt, so jokes with judge–wolf(廉貞貪狼) need appropriate limits. Wolf(貪狼), ordinarily known for sociability, loses some of that ease when “confined” by judge(廉貞) and becomes rather stiff and formal.

Judge–wolf(廉貪) may be the most meticulous of judge’s(廉貞) combinations. It dislikes settling for less, and tasks within its remit can be entrusted to it confidently. Yet it can be inflexible at work, refusing to bend even for someone very powerful. Judge’s combinations generally want control over money, especially judge–wolf. Financial resources provide security: having money on hand brings peace of mind.

In a pairing, judge(廉貞) “confines” the other star, while wolf(貪狼) intensifies its partner’s qualities. Wolf thus strengthens judge’s confinement, while judge restrains wolf’s desires—a vicious circle. Think of a tight knot: pulling harder on the wrong end only tightens it. Judge–wolf(廉貞貪狼) can work like that, so it needs to relax, take things less seriously, and stop dwelling on every difficulty.

judge(廉貞) + empress(天府) Probability in the soul palace(命宮)≈1.28%

The confinement star(囚星) and treasury star(庫星) are both reserved, so judge–empress(廉貞天府) also appears restrained. Judge(廉貞) adds a chilly edge to gentle empress(天府). By restraining empress’s accommodating side, it brings out the commanding nature of this sovereign star(帝星). Judge’s bluntness then makes the combination seem rather domineering.

As noted earlier, wolf(貪狼) in empress’s(天府) spirit palace(福德宮) brings broad interests and strong desires. These remain in judge–empress(廉府), though it shows off less than empress alone. Empress softens judge’s(廉貞) sharpness without removing it; its own sovereign quality also becomes more pronounced. The combination may say little ordinarily, but speak harshly during an argument.

Judge–empress(廉貞天府) can show a striking contrast between outward manner and inner feelings: harsh words, warm actions. For example, a woman with this combination may seem cool and self-assured, yet be affectionate and playful inside. With emotional control and good communication, it can have the charismatic presence of a commanding leader.

This combination likes managing money and, with a favorable configuration, does it well. Many people with judge–empress(廉府) work in finance or accounting. Even outside those professions, they often take charge of household finances. They generally avoid impulsive spending and know how to increase income and control expenses, so entrusting money management to them can be reassuring.

judge(廉貞) + minister(天相) Probability in the soul palace(命宮)≈1.46%

Judge(廉貞) belongs to Fire and minister(天相) to Water; together they form Water and Fire in Balance(水火既濟格). Why does judge–rebel(廉貞破軍) not form the same pattern, when rebel(破軍) also belongs to Water? Here, balance means that Water and Fire each serve a purpose and work together. Think of a fire heating water in a pot: both contribute to cooking. Rebel instead evokes the sea or a great body of water, a different image from this controlled cooperation. The analogy helps explain the stars’ qualities; sharing the Water element does not mean that different stars have identical effects.

Classical texts say 唯有天相能解廉貞之惡, but I do not fully agree. Judge(廉貞) does not represent evil in the first place, and judge–minister(廉貞天相) can readily form the widely criticized Punishment and Confinement Flanking the Seal(刑囚夾印格). The claim is therefore contradictory.

The reasoning is that minister(天相), like empress(天府), softens judge’s(廉貞) sharp edges, but without empress’s commanding sovereign nature. It is a gentler influence without that “side effect,” which explains the saying. For people represented by judge, the underlying lesson is to pay attention to how they communicate.

Judge–minister(廉貞天相) can be impulsive because marshal(七殺) occupies its spirit palace(福德宮). Acting in the heat of the moment can cause trouble. Add driven(擎羊), whose symbolic nature is punishment(刑), and impulsive behavior is especially likely to lead to legal disputes. This explains the Taiwei Rhapsody’s(太微賦) saying 刑囚夾印,刑杖惟司.

empress(天府) characteristics

Although both belong to the category of sovereign star(帝星), empress(天府) differs greatly from emperor(紫微). It also enjoys praise and being the center of admiration, but is much more understated. It is a pragmatic ruler. Where emperor may value appearances over substance, empress seeks a balance between the two.

只掃自家門前雪,不管他人瓦上霜 aptly describes empress(天府). It dislikes meddling and is less inclined than emperor(紫微) to lecture others. It may resemble fortunate(天同) in avoiding competition, but this is a choice, not a lack of courage. Do not mistake yielding for weakness. marshal(七殺) in its surface palace(遷移宮) gives it quiet authority and ensures it will not back down when it does choose to compete.

Empress’s(天府) spirit palace(福德宮) always contains wolf(貪狼), so its desires are considerable. It enjoys mental and emotional pleasures and takes an interest in mysterious subjects. Its openness and broad interests help it build a wide network of contacts.

moon(太陰) characteristics

For aesthetic sense, moon(太陰) has no equal among the stars of Zi Wei Dou Shu(紫微斗數). As its feminine representative, it is associated with grace and artistic sensibility. It likes quiet, clean surroundings and has a distinctive eye for beauty. Like fortunate(天同), it avoids conflict. Although not quite as approachable as fortunate, it still ranks among the most approachable stars.

Moon(太陰) has strong artistic talent, but less emotional resilience and is easily affected by its environment. It also likes caring for people. Unlike sun’s(太陽) forceful “I know what’s best, so we’ll do it my way” approach, moon’s care feels gentle and reassuring.

Romantic relationships are moon’s(太陰) greatest hurdle. Rich feelings, a love of romance, and a sentimental nature can leave it unsure whether to move forward or pull back. The greatest challenge comes when a relationship loses its initial novelty and settles into everyday life.

wolf(貪狼) characteristics

Wolf(貪狼) is known as Zi Wei Dou Shu’s(紫微斗數) foremost romance star(桃花星). That category fundamentally concerns social interaction and being well liked, rather than just romantic relationships. Wolf also represents Desire, but equating that Desire with Love between men and women is its greatest misunderstanding. Its desires follow whatever interests it: it explores and studies those subjects in depth by every means it can. It symbolizes the source of human motivation—desire gives people a reason to strive.

Wolf(貪狼) is curious, loves thinking, and brings intense enthusiasm to its interests. It can become deeply absorbed in a person, object, or activity it likes. Directed constructively, this trait gives it enormous potential for achievement.

Wolf(貪狼) also has a strong appetite for risk and a Take a chance for a big leap forward mentality. Life can therefore be eventful, with both successes and failures. It resists an ordinary life, refuses to give up, and does not fear losing. If wolf occupies your soul palace(命宮), broaden your knowledge and avoid ventures in fields you do not understand; staking everything on one gamble can have irreversible consequences.

advocator(巨門) characteristics

Advocator(巨門) is inquisitive about other people’s affairs and enjoys gossip. If advisor(天機) is quick in thought, advocator is quick in speech, though that does not necessarily mean talking a lot. The four transformations(四化) strongly affect it: B(化權) gives its words credibility and authority. Language is its weapon, making it formidable in persuasive argument.

When advocator(巨門) receives D(化忌), however, its speech becomes less likable and can feel overbearing: even if you disagree with its reasoning, you may struggle to win the argument. With fortunate(天同), the opposite can happen and it becomes quiet. Fortunate(天同) does not want to compete, while advocator under D(化忌) can hurt people with words; to avoid that, it may say little or nothing.

Advocator(巨門) has several five-element affinities. Most stars in Zi Wei Dou Shu(紫微斗數) have one; a few, such as wolf(貪狼) and driven(擎羊), have two. This resembles the inherited abilities that combine elements in Naruto. Advocator alone has four affinities, like a more advanced fusion ability in that story.

Advocator’s(巨門) symbolic nature of darkness(暗) has two meanings. First, it absorbs outside information like a black hole, explaining its curiosity about gossip. Second, it keeps its true self hidden rather than readily opening up. These traits may sound difficult to live with, but it is actually warm-hearted and likes caring for others. Its insecurity is strong because even it struggles to understand its own inner feelings.

minister(天相) characteristics

Minister(天相) suggests social tact and an ability to get along with many kinds of people. It excels at understanding others and using their talents well. With rebel(破軍) always in its surface palace(遷移宮), it can initially look tough. Once you know it, its peacemaking nature reveals a subtler way of handling situations beneath that unconventional exterior. It knows how to act appropriately in different settings, making it all seem natural.

Minister’s(天相) ability to act depends closely on brightness: greater brightness brings stronger execution, while less brings hesitation and timidity. As a “prime minister,” it is skilled at putting a favorable face on things. However bad a situation is, it first asks how to make it look less bad. This also makes it resourceful in finding approaches.

Minister(天相) is better suited to organizing than to leading from the top. It has leadership, communication, and planning skills while remaining approachable—one of Zi Wei Dou Shu’s(紫微斗數) few all-rounders. That balance also means it is less likely to excel dramatically in a single area.

Sage(天梁) may bring a bull to mind: it can be as stubborn as warrior(武曲), but unlike warrior(武曲) it enjoys dealing with people. Its friendships have the generous, loyal spirit of a martial-arts hero such as Qiao Feng(喬峰). Once it treats you as a close friend, excessive formality can make it uncomfortable.

People represented by sage(天梁) naturally seem steady and mature. With protection(蔭) as its symbolic nature, it likes protecting the vulnerable, yet is less deferential toward people more powerful than itself. This can make it seem morally aloof. Fortunate(天同) avoids competition out of fear, empress(天府) out of preference, and sage because it considers competing beneath it.

Choosing friends poorly can greatly affect sage(天梁). Its willingness to go to great lengths for friends attracts many acquaintances, but few truly have its interests at heart. If sage occupies your soul palace(命宮), remember that real friends will not push you into wrongdoing for their own benefit. If someone has betrayed you, do not excuse it; keep your distance and deny them another opportunity.

marshal(七殺) characteristics

The Chinese name of marshal(七殺), literally “seven killings,” may sound intimidating, but it need not look fierce. It is not especially approachable, yet that does not make it sinister. In marshal–rebel–wolf(殺破狼), think of wolf(貪狼) as the commander, marshal as the general leading troops, and rebel(破軍) as the soldier charging into battle.

As a “general,” marshal(七殺) needs unwavering conviction to lead its troops forward. It represents persistence and determination. An eagerness to act can leave too little time for reflection, making it seem rash or inexperienced. That is its individual tendency; pairing it with planning-oriented stars can strengthen its planning ability.

Marshal(七殺) can be hard to approach, making others hesitate to initiate contact. If it occupies your soul palace(命宮), smile more and take the initiative socially. Listen to advice rather than stubbornly following one course. Its sharp words can feel forceful and may disregard others’ dignity. Dealing with it requires emotional resilience, especially when judge–empress(廉貞天府) occupies its surface palace(遷移宮).

Marshal(七殺) also lacks romantic flair. Judge its care by what it does rather than what it says. Its lies are easy to expose, so it should avoid lying: what seems like a perfect story to it may look full of holes to others.

They say a friendly smile can defuse anger—unless you meet marshal(七殺). It is impatient and, jokingly, seldom holds grudges because it settles them on the spot. To make this rebellious character listen, it takes either superior ability or the authority of an elder in the family.

rebel(破軍) characteristics

As explained under marshal(七殺), rebel(破軍) represents the soldier charging at the front. Its symbolic nature is depletion(耗), reflecting the expenditure of resources. It has the courage to break down the old before building anew and to commit with no turning back. Once committed to something, it gives little weight to existing rules: if they stand in its way, it breaks them and creates its own.

People with marshal–rebel–wolf(殺破狼) tend to reject an uneventful life. They strive, venture out, and experience pronounced highs and lows. Rebel(破軍) is not all muscle and no thought: it combines planning and execution, with planning talent often expressed in the arts. Once it takes an interest in a field, it readily pursues it in depth.

The marshal–rebel–wolf(殺破狼) pattern is naturally rebellious and can seem unruly, especially rebel(破軍). Insisting on attempting what seems impossible can lift it to great heights, but even more readily bring it crashing down. If rebel is the major star in your soul palace(命宮), prepare a backup plan before making decisions.
