Fourteen auxiliary stars(十四輔星)

Introduction

Zi Wei Dou Shu(紫微斗數) divides auxiliary stars(輔星) into six auspicious stars(六吉星), six malefic stars(六煞星), and two supporting stars(二助星). These labels can misleadingly suggest that one group is always good and the other always bad. “Auspicious” means their traits more readily benefit the chart owner, while malefic stars tend to have the opposite effect. The author compares them to the respectable schools and the Sun Moon Sect in the Chinese martial-arts novel The Smiling, Proud Wanderer(笑傲江湖): neither group contains only good or only bad people.

What matters is understanding each auxiliary star(輔星) and the new traits that emerge when it combines with major stars(主星). As the author jokes, the same water can carry a boat or cook porridge: context changes its use. Look beyond rigid labels of good and bad when studying these fourteen stars. Each has strengths and drawbacks, so none should be used to make sweeping judgments about a person’s moral character.

As described earlier, the fourteen major stars(十四主星) are the class teachers, setting each palace’s character. The fourteen auxiliary stars(十四輔星) are the student representatives. Capable representatives make classroom management easier; representatives who work against the teacher make for a much more turbulent class.

Note

Some auxiliary stars(輔星) can undergo the four transformations(四化), which alter their traits. For example, scholar(文昌) is associated with literary ability and a strong memory, but under the D transformation(化忌), these strengths may instead perform below average.

Six auspicious stars

officer(左輔)

Yin and Yang(陰陽)Yang 🌕five elements(五行)wu Earth(戊土) ⛰️Star group-
Symbolic natureSupportElement coloryellowEnergy colorYellow light
Domain-Roledo good deedsAliasBenefactor star(貴人星)

Everyone welcomes a benefactor(貴人), but the term is often misunderstood as someone who must help you greatly. A benefactor need not be a friend, or even a person. Officer(左輔) represents assistance, so people with it in the soul palace(命宮) often enjoy helping others and supporting their advancement. This help comes from a senior or mentor’s perspective, directed toward someone less established.

Officer(左輔) can therefore help raise status. It is often called a “male benefactor”(男性貴人) because its help is direct, forceful, and readily felt. These traits can also create a formal or authoritative manner. People with officer may show confidence and authority at work or socially, enjoying leadership and offering guidance and support.

That directness and force can sometimes seem aloof or difficult to approach. Officer(左輔) also uses surrounding relationships to build status and influence, adding skill in managing interpersonal relationships to the major stars.

helper(右弼)

Yin and Yang(陰陽)Yin 🌑five elements(五行)gui Water(癸水) 🌊Star group-
Symbolic natureSupportElement colorblackEnergy colorBeige light
Domain-RoleAuthority to establish rulesAliasBenefactor star(貴人星)

Helper(右弼) is gentler than the direct officer(左輔). Its support often happens quietly behind the scenes and may go unnoticed, hence its traditional label of “female benefactor”(女性貴人). Gentleness, kindness, consideration, and understanding describe its qualities.

People with these traits listen to others’ needs and willingly offer help, comfort, and encouragement. Yet helper(右弼) can also be easily swayed by other people’s opinions, making personal views and positions less firm.

Helper(右弼) pairs well with forceful stars(星曜), softening their sharper traits and making them more receptive to advice. Paired with an already uncertain star, however, it can lead to excessive indecision.

These qualities make helper(右弼) a popular star. Its assistance can lack judgment, however, and sometimes make matters worse despite good intentions. It also adds artistic refinement and talent.

assistant(天魁)

Yin and Yang(陰陽)Yang 🌕five elements(五行)bing Fire(丙火) 🔥Star groupSupporting star of the Southern Dipper(南斗助星)
Symbolic natureBenefactor(貴人)Element colorredEnergy colorRed light
Domain-RoleSupport and achievementAliasTianyi benefactor(天乙貴人); scholarship star, talent star, examination-success star

Assistant(天魁) is the Tianyi benefactor(天乙貴人), traditionally described as a “male benefactor”(男性貴人). Whereas officer(左輔) has the manner of a senior mentor, assistant has that of a leader. It brings a strong desire to direct people and decisiveness in making decisions. Both assistant and aide(魁鉞) can adopt an official tone and be very deliberate about their wording.

Classical texts praise assistant and aide(魁鉞) so highly that having them can sound like a guarantee of wealth and status. In that historical setting, literary skill, leadership drive, and social judgment did make advancement easier. Today, however, people are critical of those whose character does not justify the position they hold.

Among the benefactor stars, aid from assistant(天魁) must be earned through your own efforts. It addresses the immediate problem rather than its underlying cause, so it mainly offers urgent relief. You still need solid abilities of your own: its support depends directly on your competence and understanding. This star also relates to academic achievement, but chiefly strengthens literary qualities rather than science and engineering.

aide(天鉞)

Yin and Yang(陰陽)Yin 🌑five elements(五行)ding Fire(丁火) 🔥Star groupSupporting star of the Southern Dipper(南斗助星)
Symbolic natureBenefactor(貴人)Element colorredEnergy colorPurple light
Domain-RoleSupport and achievementAliasJade Hall benefactor; concubine star, surgery star

Aide(天鉞) is called the Jade Hall benefactor(玉堂貴人) and traditionally described as a “female benefactor”(女性貴人) because its help, like helper’s(右弼), is indirect. Assistant(天魁) excels at leading people, while aide excels at thinking, analysis, and planning. It prefers managing tasks to managing people and dislikes interference in work for which it is responsible.

In helping others, aide(天鉞) differs from assistant(天魁), which addresses the immediate problem. Aide more often tackles the underlying cause, removing trouble before it becomes apparent. For example, suppose you want to buy a car but are a little short of the down payment. Assistant might lend you the missing amount, whereas aide might negotiate a discount that saves you that amount altogether.

The example is somewhat simplified, but it illustrates the difference between assistant and aide(魁鉞). Aide’s(天鉞) help still requires your own effort to obtain, and it also adds intelligence and insight. More precisely, officer and helper(輔弼) tend to offer help as soon as they know it is needed, like senior family members. With assistant and aide, awareness alone is not enough: you need to ask for their help actively.

scholar(文昌)

Yin and Yang(陰陽)Yang 🌕five elements(五行)geng Metal(庚金) 🪙Star groupStar of the Southern Dipper(南斗之星)
Symbolic natureScholarly distinction(文貴)Element colorwhiteEnergy colorblue-white light
Domain-RoleAchievement through formal qualifications and examinationsAliasExamination-success star, documents star, amorous star, romance star

Scholar(文昌) is Zi Wei Dou Shu’s(紫微斗數) foremost star of academic and examination achievement(科甲). It represents written and documentary matters and resembles a lesser sage(天梁), with the same aloofness and stubbornness. Classical texts call it “success through an established path”(正途功名). A simple illustration is telling your mother, “I want to study this subject and work in that field,” and receiving her wholehearted approval. The field she regards as a respectable, conventional career is likely what this expression refers to.

This star favors literature and a cultured, courteous manner. On its own, it is not a romance star(桃花星), because it can seem rigid and inflexible. Combined with romance stars, however, that impression can shift from stiffness to a suave, charming manner.

Scholar(文昌) suggests a comparatively good memory for what one hears and reads. This is also why it is associated with examination success(科甲): literary skill and memorization were powerful advantages in the historical examination system. These skills remain valuable today, but no longer hold the same irreplaceable position.

artist(文曲)

Yin and Yang(陰陽)Yin 🌑five elements(五行)gui Water(癸水) 🌊Star groupFourth star of the Northern Dipper(北斗第四星)
Symbolic natureLiterary and artistic brilliance(文華)Element colorblackEnergy colorBeige light
Domain-RoleAchievement through alternative paths, elegance, eloquence, talentAliasGossip star, performance star, secondary-partner star, talent star, art star, romance star, romantic star, concubine star

Artist(文曲) is the fourth star of the Northern Dipper(北斗) and Zi Wei Dou Shu’s(紫微斗數) leading star of the arts, representing artistic refinement and romance. Its traditional description is “success through an unconventional path”(異途功名); the author jokes that “success through the arts”(藝途功名) would fit too. To contrast it with scholar(文昌), imagine telling your mother what you want to study and do for work. Instead of enthusiastic approval, she reacts with exaggerated alarm: “Absolutely not!” That choice is likely the kind of unconventional path meant here.

These examples only illustrate the different paths to achievement(科甲) represented by scholar(文昌) and artist(文曲); parents today are often much more open-minded. Artist tends to be flexible and emotionally sensitive. Because it strengthens expression, it can also suggest verbal disputes and controversy.

Artist(文曲) needs cultural knowledge to give its artistic expression substance. Without that foundation, it can seem affected or pretentiously profound. Zi Wei Dou Shu(紫微斗數) has many paired stars whose combined effects resemble a bonus from matching equipment in a game. Scholar(文昌) and artist together form the literary distinction pattern(文貴文華格), suggesting exceptional talent. Yet relying too heavily on a named pattern can lead to mistaken judgments.

Six malefic stars

ideologue(地空)

Yin and Yang(陰陽)Yin 🌑five elements(五行)ding Fire(丁火) 🔥Star groupTwenty-eight lunar mansions(二十八星宿)
Symbolic natureEnergy of emptiness(空亡)Element color-Energy color-
Domain-Role-AliasFinancial-loss star, interruption star, reset star, religious star, fantasy star, creativity star

Classical texts describe ideologue(地空) as “半空折翅”, which sounds ominous. Yet the star is relatively neutral. The image of interrupted flight comes from its emphasis on thinking rather than acting.

Ideologue(地空) dislikes hassle. When a task involves many steps or worries, it may choose avoidance. Beginnings are often difficult, and retreating in the face of challenges can interrupt progress—hence its description as an “interruption star.”

This star is thoughtful and full of ideas. Combined with horse(天馬), it suggests a free-ranging imagination that leaps between ideas. This can favor artistic creation and copywriting or campaign planning. Yet ideas still need practical implementation. When its imaginative plans cannot be realized, ideologue(地空) may feel misunderstood: “別人笑我太瘋癲,我笑他人看不穿”

fickle(地劫)

Yin and Yang(陰陽)Yang 🌕five elements(五行)bing Fire(丙火) 🔥Star groupTwenty-eight lunar mansions(二十八星宿)
Symbolic natureDisruptive energy(劫煞)Element color-Energy color-
Domain-Role-AliasFinancial-loss star, rumor star

Classical descriptions pair ideologue’s(地空) “半空折翅” with fickle’s(地劫) “浪裏行舟”. Ideologue mainly concerns thought; fickle concerns material matters. Fickle is selective about opportunities and weighs them repeatedly, even when an opportunity looks very attractive.

Being selective can mean missing good opportunities, even when great wealth seems within reach. The author jokes that a principled person seeks money properly, while an unprincipled one ignores the rules. Fickle(地劫) does not pursue every possible source of income. That restraint can make life laborious, as it keeps searching for a way forward within its own chosen rules.

There is nothing wrong with earning money in a dependable way. Fickle(地劫) is risk-averse, however, so activities whose benefits take a long time to appear can be challenging. After investing effort initially, it may stop at the first warning of risk, leaving others to reap the eventual rewards. It works best with short, straightforward projects that deliver results quickly.

Some pursuits, such as hobbies or research, cannot deliver quick results. They require a suitable pace and gradual progress. Fickle(地劫) can therefore develop broad interests without mastering them. Planning the work in stages and completing one stage at a time can help.

impulsive(火星)

Yin and Yang(陰陽)Yang 🌕five elements(五行)bing Fire(丙火) 🔥Star groupFloating star of the Southern Dipper(南斗浮星)
Symbolic natureFierce, explosive energyElement colorredEnergy colorRed light
Domain-RoleVolatile temper and destructivenessAliasimpulsive star

The name impulsive(火星) fits its tendency to encourage impulsiveness, chiefly in thought. It can mean deciding without enough deliberation and following the heart. This brings energy, determination, a drive to pursue goals, and reluctance to compromise. Yet it can also mean making choices too quickly under the influence of emotion.

They tend to favor immediate satisfaction and quick results over long-term achievement and a solid foundation. Waiting or postponing enjoyment does not appeal to them. This drive can bring exceptional energy and enthusiasm to pursuing a dream, but pausing to consider the consequences before acting can prevent regret and unnecessary risk.

Impulsive(火星) has a strong influence on emotions: warmth and enthusiasm when happy, stormy intensity when angry. Feelings fluctuate widely, and inner passion or impulse shows directly. People with these traits find it hard to hide their emotions, expressing joy, anger, sorrow, and pleasure openly. This intensity can make them seem candid and authentic in conversation.

spark(鈴星)

Yin and Yang(陰陽)Yin 🌑five elements(五行)ding Fire(丁火) 🔥Star groupFloating star of the Southern Dipper(南斗浮星)
Symbolic natureFirm, intense energyElement colorredEnergy colordark red light
Domain-RoleForceful and startlingAliasReserved but passionate star, unyielding star

Unlike impulsive’s(火星) direct expression, spark(鈴星) holds emotions inside and releases them gradually. It gives a reserved, thoughtful impression, processing feelings internally rather than readily showing them.

This reserve helps them handle emotions calmly and with restraint, without being easily swept along by others’ feelings. Too much restraint can also make emotions build up. Learning to express and release them appropriately helps maintain emotional well-being and balanced relationships.

Spark(鈴星) is careful with resources and considers matters thoroughly before acting. It favors orderly planning across everyday life and rarely acts on impulse. This makes its approach dependable, although excessive caution can mean missed opportunities.

Their careful use of resources supports detailed, dependable financial and life planning, helping keep life balanced and stable. It brings thoroughness to everyday affairs, but they should also remain open-minded and accept moderate risks when appropriate to allow further growth and gains.

tangled(陀羅)

Yin and Yang(陰陽)Yin 🌑five elements(五行)xin Metal(辛金) 🪙Star groupFloating star of the Northern Dipper(北斗浮星)
Symbolic natureD(忌)Element colorwhiteEnergy colordark red light
Domain-RoleDisputes, crueltyAliasDispute star, entanglement star

The Chinese name of tangled(陀羅) echoes the word for a spinning top—the toy children keep turning with a whip. The image is of thoughts circling without reaching a decision. This can lead to hesitation and procrastination: decisions are hard to make quickly, and delayed action may mean missed opportunities.

Thinking before acting can reduce many risks and improve the chance of success. Tangled(陀羅) still needs to move beyond indecision and face choices, rather than miss opportunities or circle endlessly. A star’s trait is not inherently better or worse; using it well can bring unexpected benefits.

Tangled(陀羅) excels at research and steady, step-by-step work without arrogance or haste. It suits long-term tasks, valuing sustained progress and accumulated depth over immediate gain. It wants to understand principles, the nature of things, and underlying patterns. This curiosity can be an advantage in professional or academic study, provided excessive deliberation does not prevent practical action and achievement.

driven(擎羊)

Yin and Yang(陰陽)Yang 🌕five elements(五行)geng Metal(庚金) 🪙 | bing Fire(丙火) 🔥Star groupFloating star of the Northern Dipper(北斗浮星)
Symbolic naturepunishment(刑)Element colorwhiteEnergy colorred and white light
Domain-Rolerough, cruelAliasProcessing Star, Rebellious Star

If impulsive(火星) represents impulsiveness in thought, driven(擎羊) represents it in action. It is action-oriented, expressing itself through deeds rather than merely talking or thinking. It moves quickly, faces challenges bravely, and does not shy away from difficulty. This brings decisiveness and a readiness to turn decisions into action.

Driven(擎羊) does not naturally pause to think first, so it needs to reflect before acting to avoid impulsive mistakes. Its drive helps it pursue goals and overcome difficulties firmly, but it must also consider the possible consequences.

Driven(擎羊) focuses on its own actions and goals rather than others’ opinions or expectations. It prefers its own way and pace, with less influence from outside. This independence can make it seem unconventional or like a maverick, yet it also creates a distinctive personality and appeal. It remains firm in pursuing its goals and lifestyle. Although less approachable, its sincerity and resolve can attract people who appreciate those qualities.

Two supporting stars(二助星)

horse(天馬)

Yin and Yang(陰陽)Yang 🌕five elements(五行)bing Fire(丙火) 🔥Star groupCentral star system(中天星系)
Symbolic natureTravel and movement(驛馬)Element color-Energy color-
DomainRuler of surface(遷移)RoleMovement and transitionAliasTravel star, movement star, wealth star, earnings star

Horse(天馬) may be the most restless star in Zi Wei Dou Shu(紫微斗數), adding change and uncertainty. It is energetic, seeks excitement, and keeps looking for new challenges and opportunities. Adventurous and eager to try new things, it has little patience for monotony and wants freedom and variety rather than restraint.

Horse(天馬) actively pursues its own goals, favoring a free atmosphere over restrictions. It wants to explore the unknown and grow. This is an advantage for someone who enjoys being on the move, but can be uncomfortable for someone seeking a settled life.

Instead of persisting with one goal, horse(天馬) prefers exploring different opportunities, which can make chances of success easier to spot. Its weaknesses are persistence and building depth over time. It can chase a small gain and miss a much larger opportunity.

money(祿存)

Yin and Yang(陰陽)Yin 🌑five elements(五行)ji Earth(己土) ⛰️Star groupThird star of the Northern Dipper(北斗第三星)
Symbolic naturewealthElement coloryellowEnergy colorGreen light
DomainRuler of wealth(財帛)RoleLongevity and high rankAliasWealth star

Money(祿存) may be Zi Wei Dou Shu’s(紫微斗數) most popular star—who would not welcome a wealth star(財星)? Yet the wealth it represents is closer to capital or resources already in hand. It adds stability because people tend to handle their own capital carefully, and thus also suggests caution.

Money(祿存) is very careful about spending. This can prevent financial loss but also mean missed opportunities. It is therefore risk-averse and can steady more impetuous major stars(主星). Classical texts consequently describe it as mitigating malefic influences(解煞).

Tips

Auxiliary stars(輔星) mainly modify the major stars(主星). Several can share a palace, creating competing traits that can coexist rather than cancel each other out. For example, driven(擎羊) and spark(鈴星) together combine impulsive action with consideration of consequences. Wanting to rush ahead while feeling compelled to think can create substantial emotional pressure, which is why a concentration of malefic stars and the D transformation(煞忌) can feel demanding. The contrasting traits of horse(天馬) and tangled(陀羅) can also coexist in one palace and create inner strain. Depending on the palace, that strain may be felt as physical or mental exhaustion.
